Bio
Raised in the Highlands of Scotland, Johan Hallberg-Campbell is a freelance photographer, living and working between Toronto and the UK since immigrating to Canada in 2007.
He is a Graduate of 'The Glasgow School of Art', where he received the prestigious Portrait Photographer Award. Johan has exhibited his work widely in Canada and Scotland. He was one of five artists selected to exhibit their work at the first international Magenta Flash Forward Festival, Canadian Exhibit (Toronto, October 2010), from his series "Grand Bruit" and is a Flash Forward 2012 competition winner for emerging photographers.
He has photographed, been published and curated for publications and institutions such as: Canadian Red Cross, The Walrus, Canadian Art, The Big Issue, Scots Magazine, Pikto, VII Gallery, Report on Business, Globe and Mail, CTV, The Grid, Toronto Magazine, Toronto Tourism and The Harbourfront Centre. Johan continues to work alongside fellow photographers having curated over 40 gallery shows since 2008.
His documentary work focuses on capturing the visual manifestation of the latent concept of "Place". Exploring what it means to belong to a community and have traditions rooted in heritage, and alternatively what happens when one's "place" is altered, removed, distorted and shifted. The aim is to photograph the environment without prejudice, creating images that are an honest representation of what he sees.
Johan's work 'Coastal' will be a solo exhibition at The Harbourfront Center, Toronto, April 21st - July 15th 2012. The work has been selected to be a 'Feature Show' during the Scotiabank Contact Photo Festival this May. He will also be part of a large scale commissioned outdoor exhibition documenting 'The Toronto Harbourfront'. The show is due to commence June 22nd 2012 and will be on display for one year on the Toronto waterfront.
